William F. Logan is listed in the 1910 and 1920 censuses with an occupation of "Tannery". He may have worked at the large Burke Tannery that is described in the book Burke County: A Brief History by Edward W. Phifer, Jr:2
In 1895 the firm of Kistler, Lesh, and Company established a tannery at Morganton. The business prospered until 1921 when a catastrophe occurred. All of the company's tanneries were fully stocked with hides acquired at 50 cents per pound, and the price of hides plummeted to 8 cents per pound. Negotiations were opened with representatives of the International Shoe Company of St. Louis, Missouri, and after several days of conferences Kistler, Lesh, and Company - including the Burke Tannery - was acquired by the St. Louis firm. International Shoe continued to operate the tannery until 1948, when it was closed. Burke Tannery had always made sole leather for boots and shoes, but because leather had by this time been replaced by Neolite or composition soles there was no further need for the locally manufactured product. The closing of Burke Tannery marked the end of a long history of tanning in Burke County.
