The following is the text of the will of Stephen White of Cleveland County, North Carolina dated July 17th, 1869. This text was transcribed from a photocopy of the original will obtained from the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh, North Carolina on August 11th, 2006. State of North Carolina, Cleveland County
I Stephen White do make this my last will
and testiment being in my right mind and
knowing the uncertinty of life there fore I appoint
my Son Andrew S. White my executor to settle
up all my business.
1st I bequeath to my own body to be lade a
way desently
2nd I bequeath that all my berriel apparel be
paid out of my money and funeral expenceces
3rd I bequeath to my Son Andrew S. White and Alfred
N. White my youngest son I want them to have
all my land it is lying in two track but joining
together I want it Equally devided between them
boath and while they is timber on the land I want
them boath to have lumber
4th I bequeath to my son Andrew S White one Sorrel horse
five years old
5th I bequeath to my Son Alfred N. White one bay
hores Two years old
6th I bequeat that I want them my wife Nancy White
and my children at home to keep my Sorrel mare
till she raises a colt and longer if they want to
7th I bequeath to my daugher Elizabeth White one
cow called Cherry
8th I bequeath all the ballence of my cows hogs and
sheep hous and kitchin furniture to go to my
wife and children at home to live on
9th I bequeath to my son Andrew S. White and Alfred N White
my waggon Black Smith tools & farming tools to have
Equally
10th I bequeath to my wife and children at home
all the money I have on hand and is owing to me
after all my just debts is paid for them to live
on this property for the family use at home
there fore I do here by these presence make this my
last will and testiment and appoint my son

The following is the text of the will of Nancy White of Cleveland County, North Carolina dated August 29th, 1888. I Nancy White of the county and state afore said
Deem it my duty to arange my affares to my own [? noto___]
and being in my wright mind and cences and knowing
that I am born to die I make this my last will and testi
ment in the name of God Amen
1st I bequeath to my own body to be layed a way disenly
and all my funeral expences and burial affairs paid fore
out of my personal property
2nd I want all my jus debts paid out of my personal property
3rd I bequeath to my beloved son William N. White one
hundred dollars in money
4th I bequeath my beloved son Andrew S. White one hundred
dollars in money and my mule if it alive when I am gone also my syth
and cradel and spaid
5th I bequeath to my beloved son Alfred N White one hundred
dollars in money
6th I bequeath to my beloved daughter Frances Horton
Elminer Newton and Elizabeth Elmore and Mahulda Newton
all my intire house tract of land and the Ellexander Wilson

Other Notes

• I am not sure exactly how many children Stephen and Nancy White had, but it was probably at least eight based on the individuals that were listed in their household (#1394) in the 1850 Cleveland County, NC census: Stephen (age 46, farmer), Nancy (42), Francis J. (15), Elmina (13), James G. (12), William O. B. (12), Martha (10), Andrew S. (8), Nancy E. (6), and Sarah H. (4). James G. and William O. B. are listed as twins.
• In the 1860 Cleveland County, NC census their household (#748) includes Stephen (age 51, invalid), Nancy (50), Andrew (17, farm laborer), Elizabeth (16), Sarah W. (13), Alfred (9), and John (17, farm laborer).
• In the 1870 Cleveland County, NC census Stephen is no longer found, but Nancy is listed with the following household (#84): Nancy (age 60), A. S. (27, farmer), Elizabeth (24), Alfred (18, farm laborer), Elmina Newton (34), Frances Newton (8), and Jerry Queen (20, farm laborer).
• The U.S Federal Census Mortality Schedule for 1870 confirms the death of a Stephen White in household #84 of Township #10 of Cleveland County, NC. He is listed as a 69 year old married male farmer who died in August [1869] of Typhoid Fever.
• Stephen and Nancy White were buried at the Clover Hill United Methodist Church cemetery near Casar in Cleveland County, NC. Stephen White is listed on his tombstone as "Stephen H. White". Click here for photos of their tombstone.
• Confederate Civil War records indicate a James G. White of Cleveland County, NC died of disease in Goldsboro, NC on 13 February 1862. He was a private in Company F of the 34th NC Infantry. He enlisted in October 1861 at the age of 23. His wife was listed as D. C. White. This was likely the James G. White who was listed in the household of Stephen and Nancy White in the 1850 census.
• Confederate Civil War records also list a William V. White from Cleveland County, NC who was a Sergeant also in Company F of the 34th NC Infantry. He also enlisted in October 1861 at the age of 23. He was captured at Gettysburg in July 1863 and was later exchanged as a prisoner of war. He returned to his company and surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse at the close of the Civil War in April 1865. Perhaps this was the William O. B. White listed in the household of Stephen and Nancy White in the 1850 census. What appears to be William O. B. White in the 1850 census could actually be William V. B. White due to a closed "V".
• I haven't found any original record such as a will, deed, or estate file that identifies the father of Stephen White. Posey Downs' book² indicates Stephen White was the son of Nathaniel White of Virginia. No source is cited for this information. However, census records do show that a Nathaniel White was present in Cleveland County, NC in the 1850 census in household #1399, and he was of an age that he could have been the father of Stephen White.
• The Fall 2016 issue of the Bulletin of the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County includes an article entitled Abstracts from a 1906 Defense of the Heritage of Patterson Lorenzo Newton¹ in which Patterson Lorenzo Newton provides extensive information about his grandmother Nancy Goins and her family. He identifies the parents of Nancy Goins as Robert Goins, son of Alexander Goins, and Peggy Newton, daughter of Captain Ben Newton. Among the information provided on Nancy Goins are the following points:
  • "Nancy Goins, the writer's grandmother, in 1832, married Stephen White, a son of Nathaniel White, of Virginia. They had several children, the oldest being but twelve years of age when the father was stricken with paralysis which made him a life-long invalid. ... she sent three of her boys to the "fiery edge of battle" - William, who was a sergant [sergeant] in Company F, 34th North Carolina Regiment, Andy and Graham. The last named laid down his life as a sacrifice upon the alter of the South. ... Nancy Goins died in 1889, left a long line of descendants, and was buried at Clover Hill."
• The Fall 2016 issue of the Bulletin of the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County, p.123, includes the following Cleveland County, NC marriage abstract: "24 December 1872. Alfred / Alford N. White, 21, son of Stephen (dec'd) and Nancy (living) White, to Sarah Elmore, 21, dau. of James and Ann Elmore (both living)."
