Joseph J. Hoyle Letter

David Buff, Jr. was mentioned briefly in a letter that a member of his company wrote to his own wife. The letters that Joseph J. Hoyle wrote to his wife Sarah are preseved in the library at Duke University. In 2010 the letters were transcribed in an excellent book edited by Jeffrey M. Girvan titled "Deliver Us from This Cruel War", The Civil War Letters of Lieutenant Joseph J. Hoyle, 55th North Carolina Infantry. Below is a transcription from Girvan's book of Joseph J. Hoyle's letter to his wife of May 11, 1864. The engagement that Joseph J. Hoyle refers to was at Talley's Mill, Virgina (May 10, 1864) which was part of the larger Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse (May 8-21, 1864). Joseph J. Hoyle survived the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, but died on September 1, 1864 in a Richmond, VA hospital from a wound he received in the Battle of Globe Tavern:

May 11, 1864
We were again engaged on the 10th (Tuesday). We charged the enemy, and drove them from two lines of their breast works. Our loss was heavy again-- The following is a list of casualties in our company-- Killed-- Jesse Cook.--1   Wounded.-- John Cline, in thigh severely; Wesley Williams in side, severely; David Buff Jr. in shoulder severely, Wm. Craige, in arm, slightly, Henry J. Willis, in mouth, slight.--6 whole loss 7.
By God's goodness I have been spared thus far. L. S. Self came through the first day safe, so did W. B. Hoyle-- since then I have not seen them. A great deal of fighting has been done, and the battle is still going on. We have driven the enemy back in almost every case in which they have attacked us. I feel to thank God for our success thus far, and pray he will give us complete success and speedy peace. Gamewell Gantt is safe thus far, Mack Hoyle is wouuded slightly in hip. Davis came through 1st day safe. I have but little opportunity to write, and less to send off what I do write. I am as ever yours in hope and love.
