Notes:
- Census data:
- The 1830 Census of Macon County, North Carolina lists Levie Logan in
a household with 3 males and 2 females.
- The 1840 Census of Cherokee County, North Carolina lists Levi Logan in
a household with 4 males and 3 females.
- The 1850 Census of Union County, Georgia lists Levi Logan (age 50, farmer)
as the head of household 361 in the 85th District with Elizabeth (age 40),
Susannah (age 20), Drury (age 18), Benjamin (age 16), John (age 14),
Sarah (age 12), Philip (age 8), and Joshua (age 5). All are listed as
born in N.C.
- The 1860 Census of Union County, Georgia lists Elizabeth Logan (age 51, farmer)
as head of household 428, post office of Blairsville, with Susan (age 30),
Drewry (age 28), John S. (age 20), Philip (age 16), and Joshua (age 14).
- Levi Logan's exact birth and death dates are not known. The best
indication of his birth date is probably a statement from his father's
Revolutionary War pension application dated 26 February 1842 which indicates
Levi Logan was 49 years old at that time. This implies a birth date of about 1792 or 1793.
However, in the 1850 census his age was listed as 50 years old which
would imply a birth date of about 1800.
He likely died sometime between 1850 and 1860 as he was listed with his
wife Elizabeth in the 1850 census, but Elizabeth was listed without him in
the 1860 census.
I have not seen the record personally, but am told that Levi's property was
listed in the name of his wife Elizabeth in the 1855 tax digest of Union County, Georgia.
This would imply that Levi died sometime between 1850 and 1855.
- Although no marriage record is known to exist, Levi Logan is thought to
have married Elizabeth Weist. Members of the Weist family are found in
early records under a variety of spellings including Weast, Weese, Wease, and West.
Various internet sources
(#1,
#2,
#3, &
#4)
indicate that Elizabeth was likely the daughter of Jacob and Mary Weist who
lived in Rutherford County, NC.
A Rutherford County marriage bond exists between Jacob Weist and Mary Yearwood
dated 2 Dec 17941.
Mary is thought to have remarried following Jacob's death to someone named Rose
(some sources indicate Samuel Rose).
An 1860 will exists in Rutherford County records for a Mary Rose who named a
daughter Elizabeth Logan, along with son Adam Weast and daughters
Margeret Lowry, Catherine Weast, and
Nancy E. Weast5.
- Based on records of his father, Levi Logan was probably raised on Duncans
Creek, a tributary of the First Broad River, in an area of Rutherford County, NC
that became Cleveland County, NC in 1841.
Land records also indicated that Jacob and Mary Weist lived in this same vicinity,
so Levi and Elizabeth likely met there.
Levi and Elizabeth had probably married by 1830 based on the age of their oldest
child listed in the 1850 census.
By 1830 Levi is thought to have moved westward to Macon County, NC based on the
name "Levie Logan" listed in the 1830 census.
In the 1840 census Levi Logan was listed in Cherokee County, NC.
Cherokee County was formed from Macon County in 1839,
so it is possible that Levi changed counties between 1830 and 1840
only because the county boundaries changed.
By 1850 Levi had moved a short distance southward to Union County, Georgia where
he was listed with his family in the 1850 census.
Levi's youngest child Joshua (age 5) was listed as born in North Carolina, so the
famiy most likely moved from North Carolina to Georgia sometime between 1845 and 1850.
- All five of Levi's sons are thought to have participated in the Civil War.
John died as a prisoner of war in Illinois in 1865, but the other four sons
survived the war. The following are scanned copies of Civil War compiled service
records that likely represent the five sons of Levi Logan:
- A fellow researcher shared the following information on the spouses of Levi's children.
I can't cite sources for this information, but it is provided here as a possible aid for others who
may be researching this family:
- Susanah - married a Mr. Allen
- Drury - married Mary (Polly) Rider on 9/23/1872
- Benjamin - married Rosena Prater on 2/10/1858
- John - died in 1865 in Civil War prisoner of war camp
- Sarah - married George Queen on 4/26/1864
- Philip - married Martha Nicholson on 10/12/1865
- Joshua - married Elizabeth McCoy
