Logans of Tryon, Lincoln, and Rutherford Counties

This web page summarizes land records from Tryon, Lincoln, and Rutherford Counties in North Carolina that reference individuals with the Logan family surname. Note that there were at least three different Logan families listed in the early land records of this area, and some names such as James, John, William, George, and Robert were used in more than one of these families. The following provides some brief background to assist in distinguishing the different families.

The following map illustrates where each of these Logan families are thought to have lived during the later part of the 1700s. Note that some of these Logans are known to have owned land in other locations, but this map is intended to show only their primary residences where they lived out the latter part of their lives. The one exception is Joseph Logan who left Rutherford County in the 1780s and eventually settled in Kentucky.

Logan Family Locations

The history of the county boundaries in this area is as follows:
Tryon County, North Carolina was formed from Mecklenburg County in 1768. In 1779, Tryon County was split into two separate counties. The eastern portion became Lincoln County, and the western portion became Rutherford County.
Lincoln County was reduced in size when a western portion became part of Cleveland County in 1841, a northern portion became Catawba County in 1844, and a southern portion became Gaston County in 1846.
Rutherford County was reduced on its western boundary when portions of it became Buncombe County in 1791, Henderson County in 1838, and Polk County in 1855. And, Rutherford County was reduced on its eastern boundary when a portion of it became part of Cleveland County in 1841.
